Chapter 18

THE GROUP OF MEN LEFT the bar without one drink being consumed. Everyone kept their wits about them and were staying sharp in case the situation turned for the worst. The reputation of military men being hard drinking and rowdy was a fantasy with these men. They were more focused and in control of their behaviors than the average man.

The opening of the back door shot the sun’s setting rays upon them. There were still two or three hours before the darkness took over the sky and reached down to the ground limiting visibility. Marty led the way with a brisk walk to a late model Honda Civic painted blue with four doors. The car was nothing impressive but filled the roll of fitting in with the other cars of Perth and keeping their disguise up.

“Take the front, Falau.” said Terry holding, out his hand like a maître d’ showing the table to a party of people.

Falau opened the door and started to slide in. “Good thinking. Keep two men behind me in case you find out I’m a Fed or something. Sound tactical, Terry?”

“You can never be too sure.” said Terry, opening the door behind Falau but waiting for him to enter the car before he got in himself.

Dropping down into the seat Falau pulled the seatbelt across his chest and buckled it in knowing that the other men in the car would take the action as him feeling secure. If the big man were on edge he would have kept the belt off making sure he was not limited in movement.

Terry sat directly behind him. Falau could feel that the man was armed and was ready to pull his gun and use it at a moment’s notice. He was not trusted by Terry. The looks he gave and his eyes shifting as Falau talked were a tell sign he was not comfortable with all the information he was hearing. His questions were pointed and had laser precision looking for a particular reaction.

“You say you were in special forces in Afghanistan.” said Terry, probing deeper with his questions. “I have a few buddies that were special forces for the USA. Maybe you ran across a few of them.”

“There are a lot of different squads out there, but maybe.”

“Any of these names sound familiar?” asked Terry. “Mitchell, Jones, Sanchez or Canny?”

“I had a guy named Sanchez in my group. His first name was Johnny. He grew up in Texas down near El Paso. Sound like the same guy.”

“You served with Johnny?” asked Terry his voice brightening. “He told me some good stories about the things you guys were involved in.”

“That’s Johnny, telling classified information to friends.”

Starting the car, Marty pulled out onto the road not bothering to slow down or look for oncoming traffic and was quickly up to speed.

“How did that story go again?” asked Terry. “I’m sure the other guys would like to hear it.”

“Are you testing me, Terry?” asked Falau, not looking back over his shoulder.

“Maybe. But it’s a good story.
